Getting rid of a kid-friendly mascot like Southpaw the dog doesn't make much sense either, as noted upthread. When the Norfolk Tides changed affiliation from the Mets to the Orioles, they changed their colors and logo and incorporated a King Neptune-ish mascot figure, but retained the well-liked, cuddly former mascot Rip Tide.
Seriously, this story reads like one of those missives from the "Letters from a Nut" books where the author would do things like write to the San Antonio Spurs and accuse them of conspiring to change their name to the Paper Towels.
