Kansas City streetcar leaders craving additional capacity

KANSAS CITY — Leaders at the Kansas City Streetcar Authority say that streetcars are so crowded, they are considering the idea of buying two more vehicles and expanding the route north toward the Berkley Riverfront Park.

Since opening for service in early May, the system has logged almost 1 million riders, or an average of about 6,600 passengers per day. The authority is gathering its ridership data using on-board sensors in each streetcar. Prior to the service opening to the public, transit leaders projected a daily ridership of only about 2,700 people a day.

Russ Johnson, a streetcar authority member, tells the Kansas City Star that the higher-than-expected ridership is a “good problem to have.”

While the streetcar service remains available to the public free of charge, the service is still generating revenues through property tax assessments, parking assessments and city payments. Since opening for business, the streetcar has generated a little more than $11 million in revenues, and has logged only $7.1 million in expenses.

If revenues continue to climb, the authority plans to look into ways to accommodate the ridership interest, including a feasibility study of extending the route north to the Berkley Riverfront Park. The authority is also looking into the possibility of purchasing new vehicles. Each streetcar costs between $3.5 million and $5 million.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Transit leaders at the KC Streetcar Partnership are moving forward with plans to extend streetcar service to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus.

The KC Street Authority, in coordination with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and the City of Kansas, Mo., has issued a notice to proceed to begin planning work on the streetcar southern extension project.

HDR Engineering will provide the planning and engineering services along with a consortium of other transit and engineering experts. The streetcar and transportation authorities will split the planning costs.

The planning and engineering work, which is expected to cost about $1 million, is estimated to take nine months to complete.

The southern extension will bring light rail service south from downtown Kansas City and Union Station toward the main campus area of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the vicinity of 51st and Brookside Boulevard.
