Publix store to open in Nocatee

Publix Supermarket will be the anchor store in the first phase of Nocatee's Town Center.

The 54,340-square-foot grocery store is scheduled to open for business in summer 2009 in the massive, 14,000-home community being built in Northeast St. Johns County.

The PARC Group and Regency Centers, which will develop the first phase of the Town Center, announced the store's commitment Thursday.

The 135,000-square-foot shopping center also will include several restaurants, banks and retail and service businesses.

Regency Centers Vice President of Investments Tom Fleming said he was "proud" to announce the deal with Publix.

PARC Group Partner Richard Ray said Nocatee has been working with Regency since 2006 to plan the first phase of the Town Center.

Future phases are expected to include a mix of retail and office space with public open spaces, park areas and fountains.

When it is completed, Nocatee is expected to grow to a town of about 30,000 people. It will not have its own town government, but will have many other amenities a town would have, including a town center, schools, recreational facilities, workplaces, 300 acres of parks and fire and police facilities.

Of course.  And identical to every other one of these in Anyplace, USA   I still can't get over how the developers and designers draw some pictures and "create" a "town."  A town is created by the people there, not by buildings and parks.  If there is no government seat within this so-called town, and no group of people living and working in the area with ideas and input about the type of surroundings they need/want,  then it's nothing more than a uber-sub-division that will have it's 10 years of spotlight and slowly fade with every other fad.

Don't get me wrong, I think these places are pretty and I'm sure the people living there will have a great time...until the marketing gods start promoting some other place as the next big thing, and then the mindless drones will move their herd somewhere else.

Any predictions on what will be next?  I'm thinking atomic ranch circa 1950's baby boom, lol.

"Nocatee is NOT in Ponte Vedra"

Nocatee is zoned by the postal service as Ponte Vedra West. They initially tried to get their own municipality but were zoned as part of Ponte Vedra West. The developers have been trying to tout that fact in all of their marketing efforts. Something to the effect of "Live in Ponte Vedra".

By the same token, someone living in a trailer home along Mayport Road could say they live in Queen's Harbor.  Just as close, and across the same ditch.

I just hope they get some employment (besides min-wage retail) down in Nocatee, so it lives up to it's billing as "self contained" - otherwise Philips Hwy and I-95 are gonna be even more slammed than they are now.

They have some land set aside for commercial/office parks, but not enough for a place that is projected to one day have 30,000 residents.  If and when it fully develops, US 1, Palm Valley Road and I-95 will be slammed, along with CR 210.  At least all of this congestion will make commuter rail feasible in Northern St. Johns County.

They have a master plan for plenty of new roads. Some of the roads have been completed and many more are slated to be completed in the coming years....at least within the community. I am not sure of the plans to feed residents onto Phillips Hwy and A1A.

30,000 is attainable because they will be introducing more condos and apts.

All roads in Nocatee have and will be designed to empty out onto County Road 210 and US 1.  If Nocatee develops into a 30,000 resident community, at some point these roads will see some congestion take place around Nocatee's outlets.
