In the past, Clay County's economic development report card was discouraging.
Little effort yielded few results.
Today, 60 percent of Clay's workforce commutes to Jacksonville and its tax base relies on residential growth, which can never yield enough revenue for needed services.
The future depends on the Clay County Chamber's work to reverse this trend.
A key to doing so can be found in the last six months of work by consultant Janet Watermeier.
The final report isn't ready yet, but Watermeier delivered encouraging news to a crowd at the Chamber's Commercial Real Estate Showcase this week.
