The vision of a Metro Jacksonville entrepreneur takes shape in Riverside. The Bold City Brewery opening is now just a few months away.
The Brewhouse For the first three years, Bold City plans to produce 1,000 barrels a year. Then production is expected to increase up to 2,500 barrels a year.
The CO2 tank
A new shipment of Kegs
The Cold Room
Hops
The Tap Room The tap room will offer specialty beers, in addition to the brewery's four staple and four seasonal beers. If everything continues on schedule, the 7,200 square foot microbrewery and tap room should open in September at 2670-7 Rosselle Street. For more information visit: www.boldcitybrewery.com |

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I am frickin' excited! I drove down Rosselle last weekend to see if I could figure out where the place would be, but didn't see it. I'll check it out again this week now that we know the address.
Idea for the taphouse: Do a "mug club" - offer a set amount (lets say 50) of oversized beer mugs that you can sell for a one-time fee of $20 each or so, then every time someone that bought a mug comes in, they get to drink an oversized beer for the same price as a regular beer.

Nice idea Tree!
I bet you Bold City guys get all giddy seeing that shiny new stainless steel brewery equipment.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
It's true, we do. I think we stood there for about 20 minutes in silence after they were taken from the truck.
Good idea Tree. I think it's something that we could get going.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
what are the four staple beers planned? An IPA included I hop(e)?
July 14, 2008, 9:30 am
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Hey Xian,
Staples are below.
Pale Ale
Red Ale
White Ale
Rye IPA
We will also be doing a DIPA (Double IPA) as a seasonal that may become a staple if it catches on.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
This seems like it will be an AWESOME place and a much welcomed addition to Riverside.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I'm ready! After reading about Inbev buying AB, give me the local stuff all day long.................I hope some of the area establishments that offer variey are smart enough to pick up a local brew as well (Jax municipal, Mellow Mushroom, etc.).
July 14, 2008, 1:15 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
If the local establishments didn't take on the local brew, they'd be morons....
July 14, 2008, 1:26 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I had heard the rumors of the sale of the past few weeks but when I heard the actual sale price of AB I was floored. The news reported something like $50 billion! Is that right?
Johnny, I agree. The other local establishments need to all jump aboard.

By AOIFE WHITE and CHRISTOPHER LEONARD
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — The maker of the King of Beers has agreed to go to work for the Belgian brewer InBev SA.
Anheuser Busch Cos. said early Monday it had agreed to a sweetened $52 billion takeover bid from InBev, creating the world's largest brewer and heading off what was shaping up as an acrimonious fight for the maker of Budweiser and Bud Light beers. Inbev brands include Stella Artois, Beck's and Bass.

It will be interesting to see how the aquisition plays out among the hardcore AB supporters. I also wonder what will become of Sea World, Busch Gardens, and Aquatica.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
That tap room looks awesome. I hope to come up from school sometime this fall to have a taste of that red ale. I'm so excited to have this in the area. Is there going to be a grand opening??

Becks Sea WORLD... Stella Gardens... ahhh... maybe Stella Sea World and Becks Gardens...

And don't forget Basstica...
Yes, there will be a grand opening.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I like the idea of a "mug club", specially since I collect beers glasses.
Another thought, some craft brewers out there (Stone, Dogfish Head, etc) have growlers you can buy and have filled @ discounted prices. I would love to buy a 3 liter Growler, and have it filled on a semi-weekly basis.
More than anything I am stoked that I can spend my beer dollars for locally created goods, instead of buying online and at Euro Street. AND that 4 outta 4 of your taps are pourin ALES!!! I can't stand that fizzy yellow water most companies are passing for lager, let alone beer. OH yeah, and can't wait to cut into a Rye IPA, sounds awesome.
Anywho, wlecome to the neighborhood Bold City Brews!

Hey Friend,
We will have growlers as well, 64oz. We actually got to go to Stone @ the Craft Brewers Conference and it was INSANE! They basically let you go anywhere you wanted to. We'll have 12 taps and all 12 will have ales.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
How about a recipe contest for the homebrewers in Jax? You could feature the winning beer on tap or in bottles (if you end up bottling). Maybe incorporate some local art work like the winery in St. Augustine has done in the past. It could be a great way to get local beer lovers and artists involved with the brewery!
Plus I think I already have the winning recipie

I'll be the judge of that. Send me a bottle!

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I like a few different types of beer. Let me know which of your four beers will be similar.
Yuengling Lager
Kronenbourg 1664
Newcastle Brown Ale
Thanks. I'm looking forward to throwing back a few pints at Bold City. I love the name.

Hey Jax,
That's another idea we have been throwing around. We would love to do something like that bi-annually. Homebrewers brew some of the best beer and we would love to showcase it as well as all of the local artists in town.

Just be careful, there is reason we don't have "40's" here in FL:
(6) All malt beverages packaged in individual containers sold or offered for sale by vendors at retail in this state shall be in individual containers containing no more than 32 ounces of such malt beverages; provided, however, that nothing contained in this section shall affect malt beverages packaged in bulk or in kegs or in barrels or in any individual container containing 1 gallon or more of such malt beverage regardless of individual container type.

A growler is not intended to be an individual container.

A growler is not intended to be an individual container.
What is it then? You certainly can't convince me that Rehoboams, Methuselahs, Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars, Melchiors, Solomons, Sovereigns, Primats, Melchizedeks and Maximi are intended to be consumed by an individual either, yet they are illegal to sell in Florida

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
What is a “growler?”
A “growler” is a large container that we may consider as either a large glass or as a bottle. These containers are usually about a ˝ gallon, but may be smaller. Some States place restrictions on removal of beer from brewpubs in ˝ gallon growlers.
What are the concerns for filling a “growler?”
A growler is either a bottle or a large glass. The distinction is solely dependent on the manner in which the brewer fills the container.
When is a growler a “bottle?”
A growler is a bottle when the brewer fills the container in advance of sale. The brewer may fill the growler prior to removal, on the brewery premises, or after tax determination on the brewpub premises.
When is a growler a “large glass?”
A growler is a large glass when a consumer uses the container to make a purchase and the brewer then fills the container. Consumers may furnish their own growler or may purchase it from the brewer.
When is tax determined on beer used to fill growlers?
There are two conditions for tax determination (please refer to §§25.25(c), 25.157, and 25.158).
If the brewer fills a “bottle” on the brewery premises, the tax is determined upon removal for consumption or sale. Since the growler is a bottle, tax is determined on the stated net contents.
If the brewer fills a “glass” on the brewpub premises, the brewer must fill it from a tank that is tax determined.
There 64oz as well, which is a gallon.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Actually, BoldCity-
I don't mean to be an a-hole, but 64 oz. is a half-gallon. A gallon is 128 oz., or 4 quarts. It's kind of a moot point, though, based on the other info cited.
I'm looking forward to checking the brewery out when you open to the public!
July 15, 2008, 10:10 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Hey ac,
Sorry about that. You're right. I was getting confused with what is considered a Growler (64oz) and what they must be in Florida, which is a gallon (128oz). Thanks for catching it, I would hate to confuse everyone more.
Cheers

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Soooo...I guess that means growlers won't be available then? I kinda thought that might be the case...bummer.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
no, no, no. We will have growlers, they will be 1 gallon, or 64oz (J/K) They will be 128oz. Sorry for the confusion, Just got my numbers mixed up.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse but...
You're allowed to bottle from 12oz, 40oz, 64oz and 128oz as long as it's not a malt beverage?
I've lived in Jax my adult life but have a huge interest in 40oz beers/ malts and have collected bottles from all over the country.
DFH makes the Liquor De malt every year which is quite the coveted 40oz bottle.
I would love to see you guys put out a forty too
Definitely looking forward to some local brews!!

July 16, 2008, 5:45 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Urban,
We'll have both. They'll start off as seasonals / specialties but could turn into staples. We have 4 staples as it stands right now, but we haven't even brewed our first batch so it could change quickly if more people prefer one over the other. If people are drinking more stout than say a red ale, we'll change the brew schedule. Hope that makes sense.

I picked up a bottle of that. Brilliant packaging, came with it's own brown bag (before you even took it off the shelf).
Thanks for including a "take home" option. Makes those limited runs of brew last a lil longer.
As for types, I will/have tried everything I can find. You guys make a stout, barleywine, malt, red, porter, dunkle (personal fav), heffeweiss, I will be there to try it.

You can bottle beer in any size you want as long as it's less than or equal to 32 ounces OR 128 ounces (1 gallon) or more. Incidently, about 5 or so years ago, it was actually illegal to bottle beer in "odd sizes," such as 1/2 litre (or ~16.9 ounces) so some non-US bottlers had to actually bottle (or label) their beers in sizes that matched what was legal here in FL.
Now, when it comes to wine, you can bottle it in sizes up to and including 3 liters. Hence my comment about Rehoboams, Methuselahs, Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars, Melchiors, Solomons, Sovereigns, Primats, Melchizedeks and Maximi, all of which are standard sizes of wine bottles that are over 3l in size, available outside of FL, and none of which I would assume would be consumed by ONE individual (which came from the "a growler isn't meant to be an individual container" comment
The only point of this was to point out that 64-oz growlers aren't legal. I would hate to see a new enterprise buy a quantity of nice glass containers that they couldn't use if someone decided to enforce the above container size laws.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I hearby suggest the name "A PHILLIP RANDOLPH PORTER" for that great brew. Reason? Phillip Randolph, was a black Pullman Car Porter, that went to law school and with the help of the socialist party back in the 1920's he was able to organize the nations FIRST black labor union. Going from making beds and shinning shoes, under the name of his boss... "George Pullman". The porters organized a club called the "International Society for the prevention of calling Pullman car porters George" at one point over 30,000 members joined including King George of England. You might recall from history class, that it was often a common practice for slaves to carry the masters name. Thus after the war, being called "George" was seen as an insult to these hard working men. While Randolph was putting feet to his prayers with the Union, back home Jacksonville started the first Negro league. The team was called the "RED CAPS" which was the railroad forerunner of todays "SKY CAPS". Red Caps often got noticed by the high class Pullman hotel chain and many ended up working for the Pullman Company.
So in one name you have:
African American History
Jacksonville History
One of Jacksonville's greatest sons
The Railroad History
Pullman History
Red Cap History
Baseball History
Imagine what a cool label you could come up with for this?!?!? BTW, I love porter, so if you like this idea, put me down for a 6 pack!

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Brian and Susan, A hearty Riverside WELCOME! And are you a sight for thirsty eyes! I live about 6 blocks away and will enjoy visiting and sampling beer that isn't "StellaBud".Still learning my finer ales and Lagers. Love unfiltered wheat beers.(Sediment..YEA!)And If someone doesn't get the growler idea..oh well..you lose.I think a gallon Growler will fit nicely under my scooter seat.Hope to meet my neighbors at the Soft opening.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I think it was called Bold City Rye Pale Ale. It was a little hoppy with a light taste of Orange, very light in color and went down quite easily. Did I mention it was strong, I was told the alcohol content was around 6.25%. Definitely worth trying.

I may have to just pop in to see the turnout because I have to be Tip-Top to drive out to the beach later in the evening for a going away party and the Black Kids show at Freebird.

I just had a pint of Bold City White Ale up at Ragland's with lunch today.
They have the Rye Pale Ale on draft, too, and are running them for $3 a pint for the first keg.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Is the soft opening open to the public?
September 22, 2008, 3:27 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Yes it'll be open to the public. I think a soft opening is like a grand opening basically but without all the hoopla and scaled back a bit so they can work out any kinks before the grand grand opening. A trial period so to speak
I'm sure Bold City or someone can clarify wtf it is i'm trying to say.

Hi Everyone,
Looks like the retail license will not be squared away until next week so we're pushing the pre-opening back a week to October 3rd. No one is more disappointed then we are, but in the big picture, it is better to abide by the law then to burn any bridges. Hope to see you in October. Be Bold.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Tried the Rye Pale ale at European street in Riverside, pretty good. Only bad thing they dropped the Sierra Nevada to carry it. Could have been a bit more Hoppy for my tastes though.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
I went for a drive at lunch in an attempt to find Bold City. I never actually found it. I am sure I probably drove by it once or twice but never arrived. If you google map it and select street view it shows the brewery at the intersection of Roselle and a pair of railroad tracks. Can someone provide some insight?
Directionally challenged???

I guess it would be from Stockton... from the I-10 interchange
October 2, 2008, 1:59 pm
Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Maybe this will help? from Stockton you go West on Rosselle St. (where the Gate Station is) and then look on your left immediately preceding the railroad tracks. If you hit the light at King Street you have passed it by about 30 feet.

Re: Bold City Brewery Update
Stopped by Friday afternoon. I want to say thanks to Brian and his family. I sampled three Bold city ales and every one was delicious. They were so good I had two more at Raglands in five points for First Friday.
Congratulations Bold City... You have a hit!
