MetroJacksonville Interviews Brad Thoburn: Part I Print E-mail
Monday, 22 January 2007
What trends do you see as being the most important during your administration in planning?

Brad discussing changes he would make in the planning department.

Brad Discussing PUD zoning process.

Why are you the person qualified to handle the growth explosion presently ongoing in Jacksonville when you do not have any experience in this field?

Since you do not have the technical qualifications to take this job, would you be willing to start at the minimum pay scale (90k) until you can either recieve enough education or experience to meet the minimum qualifications?

Do you see yourself as an orginator and director of ideas, or as a liaison between larger forces?

Can you name three other cities with a similar growth posture, and how they handled their growth with specific criticisms and praises.

What are your guiding principles for city planning?

What are your specific plans, if council approves you as planning director, for citizen involvement.

What do you think of New Urbanism?

Why do you think Downtown has lagged behind in redevelopment when compared to its surrounding inner core neighborhoods?

Look for Part II tomorrow.

qualified?

These answers are very vague. I think that Jacksonville deserves someone in this position that knows the true issues facing modern cities. This guy won't even realize he is making bad policies. Outer Beltway... good grief.

The Mayor's Vision

John Peyton must realize that this city is at a critical juncture in it's growth cycle.  Making an underqualified appointment will not only affect the growth of this city, it will adversely affect the development of his political career.  In the future he will want people to see a record of him being a visionary, not a record of possible cronyism at the expense of his constituents.

I'm Impressed

Honestly his answers were pretty good.  They showed a knowledge of planning terms and major cities in planning (reference to Portland and growth boundaries).  His philosophies aren't necessarily mine but he knows his stuff.
