Basically, it seems like he is saying nothing at all. Just sounded like a lot of sound bites to me. He is basically saying, "We are doing enough now and that is that." Good questions.
For Peyton this is not an issue. He hasn't even met with the person working to end homelessness in Jacksonville in over a year!
downtownparks November 13, 2006, 11:10 pm He got defensive...
Rather than feel empathy for the kid who got hit, he got mad at Kevin for calling "all homeless criminals" when he only called "Kenny" a criminal.
Hey Mr Peyton, the homeless issue is a real issue, even if you don't like who is asking the question. And no, not all of them are criminals, some of them just need a hand. I betting "Kenny" isn't one of those who just need a second chance.
Also, Nice hedge on the "downtown safety" question. "I, uh, feel that it is, uh"
this guy obviously values the truth so much that he feels the need to save it for special occaisions.

little Johnny lives in 'anybody but me' land. everything is better handled by private sector. or churches. no vision, no leadership, just smiles and denials. if the function of government is not to comfort the afflicted, why have one? Johnny, spend a night on the street. Ride a bus. You have so much power and privledge, and willfully remain so ignorant of what life is like down below.

November 14, 2006, 5:56 pm these people aren't "homeless"
Their home is downtown and that's the real problem. They get 3 meals a day and a place to get refuge from inclimate weather but the rest of the time they are wandering the streets and neighborhoods stealing, urinating, and causing disturbances with no supervision. The shelters are just that, a place for them to rest up, get out of the rain, and get a meal before they are back out enjoying the fruits of OUR hard work (the parks, the river, our personal property, etc...) All of these "missions" need to be held more accountable for their actions. They should have to keep tabs on who's using their facility and what they're doing.

But the blueprint for ending homelessness -- which took months of study to complete, will now collect dust at City Hall. There's no local funding to get it going.
"And without a real aggressive plan and ambitious strategies --we weren't going to solve the (homeless)problem," said Wanda Lanier.
Lanier has spent years working to end Jacksonville's homeless problem.
"So with really no political support and no funding, we felt like we couldn't go forward."
Lanier has resigned from her job, citing what she calls the lack of support from City Government to solve the homeless problem.
The money needed to put the plan in motion --which would lead to tens of millions of state and federal dollars is not coming from the Peyton Administration.
thelakelander November 15, 2006, 8:47 am Can you blame her?
Can you blame her? After all, in this video, Peyton himself, clearly states that he hasn't met with Wanda Lanier in OVER A YEAR. If the administration was just as interested in addressing this issue as it was putting hot dog carts on a drawbridge and turning Friendship Fountain into a kiddie pool, they would have made time for a face to face meeting months ago.

One should check the quality of people that were on the Mayors staff as appointees during the third year of the Delaney Administration and compare that to the people in the same positions during the third year of the current debacle administration. This dysfunctional Mayor has driven off a host of good people. Wonder why he does not get it? Who is running the City?
thelakelander November 15, 2006, 8:43 pm Does the mayor hire uneducated people...who knows?
Uneducated and no experience in a particular field are two different things. Just because you're a lawyer doesn't mean you're qualified to fly jets or build houses.

November 16, 2006, 7:01 pm Staff Turnover
If the Mayor were running the City like a business one would question why so many staff member have been asked to leave. If you look closer at their qualifications you will quickly determine most of those officials were professionals in their field where their replacements are John's cronies. If you were to look into the makings of a top tiered city you will also find out that most of the directors are long term employees. How does anyone think we can be the best with no leadership, no vision and no experience?

December 4, 2006, 1:20 pm Get on the Ball....
Mayor Peyton has busy career as it is with Jacksonville being the 13th largest city in the nation, but he needs to underdstand that in order for our city to show progress (in a good way) we need to deal with the homeless issue. These ill people are destructing the image we all want to live in. They're crowding our beautiful streets with garbage and fisces, begging us for our hard earned money, and creating ignorant, inappropiate situations for no reason. I feel that Peyton must address the city's problem because we have a beautiful city, it just needs some 'Waste Management' downtown.

Yes, the City of Jacksonville has a responsibility to do its part in solving the homeless problem. However, the homeless situation is not only a government problem it is a humanitarian issue in which every human being in this country has the duty and responsibility to resolve the situation. Start at the top of the Federal government and trickle down to the states and cities. We pay enough taxes for the homeless issue to be resolved in a very short period of time. Contact your legislative representatives and any other politician you can access especially during election time. Change the laws that don't work or are ridiculous such as not being able to give food to homeless people without the risk of legal implications to the provider. If we all unite and hit our politicians in the vote box things will change. Exercise your power in the ballot box based on humanitarian experiences!
