JTA's commuter rail study is now far enough along to provide preliminary estimates for service frequencies, ridership projections, annual Operating and Maintenance costs, as well as capital costs.  Will this be convincing enough to keep the train moving forward?

While we continue to fiddle with Bus Rapid Transit and endless studies to appease the federal government, Birmingham, Alabama is moving forward with a plan that will add them to a growing list of cities with active rail transit within the past 18 to 24 months.

Last month, JTA released maps showing initial locations for potential commuter rail stations.  A lack of focus on Jacksonville's inner city communities stands out as a major oversight.  The following list contains a few areas where urban rail stations should not be avoided.

Jacksonville is not on this list, but it does illustrate a major trend taking place in America's largest cities, exluding the First Coast of course.  Rail transit is in the midst of a renaissance.

Today, Jacksonville celebrates the opening of JTA's Five Points Trolley. Meanwhile on the other side of the country, Salt Lake City residents are flocking to the recently completed FrontRunner commuter rail line and enjoying the economic development the line is bringing with it.
