The Jake Godbold administration labeled the 1980’s as 'The Billion Dollar Decade' for downtown redevelopment.  One of the major projects planned and constructed during this era was the Southbank Riverwalk, which opened in 1985. 

Edge cities develop at or near freeway intersections and airports and they rarely include heavy industry.  They are large geographically because they are built at automobile scale.  In Jacksonville, the Southside has developed into our first true Edge City.

Lakeside Park and St. Johns Park are two overlooked streetcar suburbs that lie on the peninsula between Avondale, Lake Shore and Ortega.

Lake Shore is a neighborhood that was developed during a period when Jacksonville's street system began to evolve from an urban based model into one dominated by suburban sprawl.

Avondale was one of the first major neighborhoods in Jacksonville to have restrictive covenants.  These covenants, requiring two story homes and specific construction techniques, have been successful in creating a community that stands out amongst its Duval County peers 88 years after its conception.

Ortega is a historic neighborhood known for its giant oak trees, waterfront mansions, and parks located just south of Riverside/Avondale.

Once called the 'Avenue of Progress', Edgewood Avenue serves as Historic Murray Hill's main pedestrian friendly commercial throughfare and is in the middle of a massive makeover. 

The Phoenix Avenue Neighborhood was developed in the early 1900's as a working class community catering to the railroads and the port.
