Jacksonville in the minds of others Print E-mail

Karen Mathis of the Times-Union recently wrote a balanced piece on how Jacksonville is perceived by outsiders.  Mathis was recently in Missouri to speak at a tax conference (the after-party there must have been WILD!) and informally surveyed some of the attendees on their thoughts on Jacksonville.  It seemed like the majority had no opinion of our city.  Of those who did know of Jacksonville, they had relatively little positive to say.

How do wealthy, well meaning, and educated downtown revivalists accidentally destroy cities?

Not every failure of America's urban core's were created with sinister intent. In fact, most were likely created by people with good intentions of revitalizing their downtown. After all, the road to hell is paved with good intentions...

Jeff Bruce of the Dayton Daily News, the local paper in Dayton, Ohio, recently interviewed Dr. Benjamin Schuster.

Dr. Schuster is determined to be an integral part of the revitalization of downtown Dayton. His commitment to his city's downtown became clear when he spearheaded the fundraising of $8 million for the performing arts center that now bears his name. After that, he relocated, with his wife, to live in downtown Dayton.

Requesting public records from Mayor Peyton's staff can often be a daunting task.  Even though state law guarantees these records to you, (after all, they are YOURS) you quickly begin to see the unrolling of the red tape as you are passed from person to person.  Delay upon delay piles up until you are often discouraged and frustrated to the point of not caring anymore (this CERTAINLY would not be the intention of the administration though)!  But it doesn't have to be that way...not if your name is Mary Kelli.  Follow us as we examine "A Tale of Two Reqests".

Downtown parking is in the news again.  This time there is discussion of drawing lines to mark the parallel parking spaces along the street.  Elimination or time extension of parking meters have historically been the topic of conversation.  We have found a solution!

When electing public officials to office, what do we, the voting public, have a right to expect from the candidates campaigning for those offices?  First and foremost we expect honesty.  Additionally, we expect the candidates to speak the truth and to play by the rules set forth in election law.  Are we ever let down?  Sure we are.  But we shouldn't let these disappointments lower our expectations that these candidates will follow the law.
