October 29, 2012, 06:59:12 AMDo we know if M Shack is actually going to be built? Last I heard the project was dead.
Also, what's the deal with Salty Fig? Feels like its taking eons.

October 29, 2012, 07:03:27 AMWell compared to Pulp in Avondale both of those projects you mentioned are flying along.
What's up with 220 Riverside?
Sadly it appears not much is going on, must be that pesky mobility fee!!

October 29, 2012, 07:16:34 AM220 Riverside is supposed to break ground in November. It's in the Downtown TCEA so it wouldn't have had to pay a mobility fee anyway.

October 29, 2012, 07:24:27 AMI remember you mentioning that in July but there was a Jax Daily Record article in September mentioning it was still coming. Has something changed since then?

October 29, 2012, 08:25:01 AMWith just a little work Aardwolf Brewery could change those tiles from "Distributors of Quality Tile" into "Distributors of Quality Ale".

October 29, 2012, 08:34:39 AMI continue to hear from 2 sources close to Medure that the buildout is too pesky and they're actively looking for another spot. (I'm not going to name names, as they still work in some capacity for the guy.) Who knows...I'm inclined to believe the Daily Record, but I also don't get why his employees with be dishing out a completely different story.
Very true!

October 29, 2012, 08:42:05 AMCool, I was just messing about the mobility fee.
If you go on the Aardwolf facebook page they have some pics of the interior build out progress and some design renderings. Looks like the main entrance is going to be on the back side of the building and the old tile showroom is in limbo right now as to what they are going to do with it.

October 29, 2012, 09:15:49 AMI have always loved the tile building. I think the idea of changing the tile to read Ale , or Beer, would be great. The building is so unique, and rare these days. Does not seem like it would be very hard to update, and restore a bit.

October 29, 2012, 10:16:07 AMWhy the fence around the VA Center??
thelakelander
October 29, 2012, 10:21:10 AMGood question. They tore down some great historic African American structures for that gated parking lot. I assume they are afraid of Springfield and what's left of Sugar Hill and Hansontown.

October 29, 2012, 10:36:31 AMShands goal is to fence their entire properties. Just like FSCJ is doing Downtown.

October 29, 2012, 10:50:35 AMHmmm, if i had to guess, i'd say it was to fend off the zombie apocalypse. Just like NOAA buying thousands of rounds of ammunition, Shands Jax is concerned about undead creatures flooding our streets and storming our businesses!!!

October 29, 2012, 04:06:42 PMMilitary installations are nearly ALL fenced, since the VA is full of broken military men and women it has to rank high on the retaliation list for terrorists. The post exchange will require a VA ID for tax free purchases. There will be a security detail at all entries and exits. As there are no hospital beds in the facility it will be closed on weekends and holidays, the safe thing to do is shut the gates on these dates. I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the neighborhood or residents, just standard operating procedure.
thelakelander
October 29, 2012, 04:09:30 PMWhy no fences at the existing location?
Also, when the VA moves, what will happen with the existing building and parking garage?
Ocklawaha
October 29, 2012, 10:42:56 PMThis has been a bone of contention for some time, the building never belonged to the VA, it's actually a lease of Shand's Property. Probably for competitive reasons, the VA cafe was boarded up, and the Post Exchange non existent. The building is in very poor condition and will need major renovation for any reuse. The parking garage is in worse shape, there are giant steel band aids patched into the 2 halves anywhere the cracks have grown to pothole size, most of the support posts are cracked all the way through and they too are 'tied' to the concrete beams with a patchwork of big bolted steel. I would think a much better use could be found by doing a complete demolition of both structures and replacing them with something more inviting.
The new VA will have all of whistles and bells that the other major VA centers have, and it will be VA property. We have the fastest growing VA clinic in the nation and one of the largest populations of Veterans. So where does the VA put the hospitals? Gainesville and Lake City, I understand the Gainesville clinic is in a teaching and research hospital, but LAKE CITY? REALLY?
Jason
October 30, 2012, 09:39:55 AM^ That has boggled me for quite some time. Sounds like Lake City did some serious politickin to land it.
