March 02, 2012, 07:15:09 AMI just got my tickets for this event. I have been to the food trucks at Rutgers University in NJ and in Portland, Oregon. I am hopeful that this event helps Jacksonville embrace the food trucks. They are great opporunities for start up businesses and are fun for the local community.
Looking forward to it. I commend those who have helped make this happen.

March 02, 2012, 07:59:25 AMThat's why we are doing this. Number one, a city that touts itself as being 'business friendly' should encourage ways for would-be entrepreneurs to start an affordable business. Number two, food trucks help to stimulate pedestrian activity in a dowtown that badly needs it. Number three, food trucks actually have some great food! I visited with Mother Fletchers yesterday (a participating member) and had an AWESOME sandwhich with blue cheese chips(all homemade ingredients) for the same cost as a preservative-filled Big Mac combo meal. Real food tastes better!

March 02, 2012, 08:49:53 AMI will personally buy as much food as Mayor Brown wants if he brings his family down. I personally think his kids would love it!
I know the mayor's office is reading this. That offer is 100% serious!!

March 02, 2012, 08:57:52 AMYeah it would be great if the Mayor comes out. Maybe during the event talk to him about the laws against food trucks downtown and the possibility of changing those laws.

March 02, 2012, 09:03:30 AMSee, I think the mayor would be OK, but personally I think you need all of the players that are writing the bad policy so they can see first hand what they're legislating AGAINST.
Whether they show up or not, I know this will be a great event if for no other reason, I have an excuse to go drink and eat and be merry (as if I need one.
I would assume your plan, Field, is after this one exceeds expectation, to try and do another in the core on one of our many surface lots in a few months?

March 02, 2012, 09:19:22 AMThe original idea was to do it in a downtown location like Hemming Plaza. It would be a great affordable programming concept that gets people to actually use the space as opposed to pulling up benches and making it illegal to play chess in the park. However, city regulations make it pretty difficult and financially unfeasible to pull off on public property.

March 02, 2012, 09:21:27 AMBen said is was a zoning issue.
My guess would be that it's at BCB instead of IAW for that reason.

March 02, 2012, 09:22:41 AMSort of what I figured. Would it be more feasible to do it next to Ian's place - Pheonix?

March 02, 2012, 09:31:29 AMI wonder if code enforcement has been telling Ben a load of bull? I haven't found in the code where it states he can't have a truck on his property due to its zoning classification.

We knew there was pent up demand in this town for food trucks... the city is going to have to start looking favorably on these efficient ways to create small business growth and encourage pedestrian activity downtown.

March 19, 2012, 12:01:31 PMAdditionally, we are going to have bins out to collect canned goods. For those attending, please consider bringing a few canned goods(or a few extra dollars) the day of the event that will go directly to Second Harvest of North Florida.
A few facts:
*More than 342,000 individuals in the Second Harvest service area are deemed to be “food insecure” – which means they might not be hungry, but they also don’t know when they will eat again. Of that total, more than 117,000 are children.
*The fastest-growing population in this food-insecure group is the working poor – households that have working members but can’t make ends meet, often times forced to substitute other bills and expenses for money that would have been used to buy food.
*In the 18-county area served by Second Harvest North Florida, 136,269 people are in this class of working poor with no access to federal or state benefits and often limited means to buy food (SNAP, WIC, Free lunch at school).

March 30, 2012, 09:42:30 AMA few notes to those attending:
1-Please be patient. We have limited attendance specifically to avoid queue time problems other food truck festivals have faced in other cities, but there will still be some long lines at times. All of the food trucks want to serve you good food as quick as possible, so while waiting for food you are welcome to strike up great conversation with fellow foodies while enjoying Bold City's fine local brews.
2-Some proceeds from the event are helping Second Harvest feed our city. We will have donation bins for canned food donations on hand, donation buckets if you would like to give a few dollars to Second Harvest and will be selling 'I Love Jax Food Trucks' buttons for $1 that will go directly towards Second Harvest. 1 in 4 children are underfed in our city. Second Harvest helps feed them.
3-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be respectful of our neighbors and do not park in anyone's yard or block any streets.
4-VIP starts at 11AM and regular admission starts at noon.
5-Have fun and let your city councilperson know of your support for this industry in your town. This is YOUR city, make it worth living in!

May 02, 2012, 07:44:38 AMOn the Fly will be at Art Walk tonight!!!!! Come over to the Florida Theatre and enjoy some great food and see what food trucks have to offer in Jacksonville.
Proceeds will be going towards Team Hayden:
Hayden Brooks Chadwell was born on April 28, 2011 at 35 weeks gestation via emergency c-section. He weighed only four lbs and had trouble breathing (which required surgery for a rare condition). He lived in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Wolfson’s Childrens Hospital for 82 days.During this time Hayden suffered a traumatic brain injury. His diagnosis was given as bilateral grade III/IV brain bleed with periventricular leukomalacia, choanal atresia, severe gerd, seizure disorder, cortical vision impairment, thrombosis, g-tube fed, and will have severe global developmental delay with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy.
Doctors said all the things Hayden wouldn’t do, specifically: see, eat, feel, hear, sit, crawl, stand, think, have a long life, etc. He is enrolled in the PedsCare program of Hospice, a palliative care program for children with life-long serious illness/medical fragility. He is also receiving therapy and family services from DLC Nurse & Learn Center, Early Steps, Children Medical Services, ELKS, Florida School for The Deaf & The Blind, and New Heights.
Team Hayden is a community of family and friends, doctors and nurses, educators and advocates, therapists and believers who see no boundaries and want to push that mustard seed. We are currently seeking a tax exemption/ 501c-3 status to help other families in the NICU.
Today, Hayden can hear. He is accepting food by spoon and bottle. He is tracking some with his eyes. He smiles and coos. He feels the wind on his face! He is rolling over (new milestone as of March 23). Team Hayden won’t give up.
